For the second year, hundreds of Luton residents took the opportunity to nominate those individuals or organisations that had made an outstanding contribution to improving the lives of disadvantaged people. Students and staff raised over £15,000 to travel to Africa and support orphans in Uganda, many of whom were seriously ill with HIV and AIDS. Over 500 guests attended the prestigious awards ceremony at the new Venue Central in Britannia Estates. The judging Panel of Kelvin Hopkins, Hazel Simmons, Dave Boyle, Sukh Saini, all spoke incredibly highly of the project and said they were greatly impressed by the amount raised and the impact this project had made.
Luton Sixth Form College was also commended by other dignitaries for their outstanding work both in helping young people in Luton and improving lives for as well less fortunate in Uganda. Sally Burke, Sufian Sadiq, Harriet, Andrew, Ahmar and Sarah collected the Prize, which was sponsored by Bartham Press.
Simon Kitchener, Principal commented: “I am delighted that the hard work, energy and compassion of our staff and students has been formally recognised by the Luton Community. They are a credit to themselves and to the College and I am very proud of them”.
