The annual show, held at The Hat Factory on 15th March was filled to capacity. The show was put together by a number of BTEC Retail students, as part of their Fashion Retail module, drawing inspiration from the Birmingham Clothes Show which they had visited earlier in the year. Splitting into groups, the students were tasked to come up with a sub-theme within the main theme of Movie Genres. Between the themed catwalks, ranging from military to sci-fi movie themes, were stellar performances from the students, including an inspired dance to Mission Impossible, an energetic interpretation of Men in Black and a heartfelt rendition of Adele’s ballad Someone like You, a beautiful number to draw the evening to a close.
The students gained vital life skills and experience from the event. One student commented that: “the event gave me an opportunity to put myself in a situation I wouldn’t usually put myself in. The catwalk gave me real confidence and I now feel more assured in the classroom”.
Emma Hooper, Head of Retail, said: “This experience has transformed students. Students who were reluctant to raise their hands in class have taken their place on the catwalk, in front of hundreds of people, and seem completely undaunted by the whole thing. The confidence gained by exposure and involvement is simply something you can’t buy or teach!”.
Next year, it is hoped that students taking the BTEC Managing and Planning an Event module will be able to take on full responsibility for organising and hosting the 2012 Retail Fashion Show.
