Sports Day delight for Pirton-Hill Primary pupils

BTEC students and Specialist Sports leaders provide an action-packed day for Pirton Hill Primary School atheletes of the future.

Dame Kelly Holmes, Usain Bolt, Paula Radcliffe, just some of the Olympic superstars that were on the minds of a group of primary school children as they embarked on a fun-filled day of sporting activities guaranteed to get their pulses racing. The event took place on the 29th March 2011 at Luton Sixth Form College using their brand new sports hall, astro-turf pitch and tennis courts.

Almost 200 pupils from Pirton Hill Primary School were invited for coaching by the College’s BTEC Sports students, alongside Community Sports leaders, as part of their Community Sports Leaders (CSL) qualification.  The aim of the event was not only to provide a memorable menu of sporting activities, but also to give CSL students crucial coaching experience and an invaluable insight into working with young children as part of their Sports Coaching unit. The majority of BTEC students have already passed their coaching level 1 certificate and all have completed their first-aid qualification.

The event showcased events such as a “relay” and “space hopper racing”. Pupils were challenged both physically and mentally and left the College tired but very happy!

Aluan Gwynne, Course Manager of PE at Luton Sixth Form College, and Phil Martin, lead PE teacher at Pirton Hill Primary School and organiser of the event, had many positive words particularly about the organisation of the event by the College. “The event provided a great opportunity for the youngsters to use some super facilities, and I hope it will lead to even more collaborative events between our school and Luton Sixth Form College”.

Alan added “The pupils really enjoyed every moment of the day, displaying the kind of energy and effervescence that would leave most adults gasping for breath just watching!".
