Students support Ghana project

The Student Council from Luton Sixth Form College have recently raised the sum of £500 to buy 1,000 bricks, which is being used to build a care home in Ghana.

11/23/2011

The donation was made through the Charity mat-to-fore (www.mattofore.org), who are working in the village of Kumasi with the abandoned and orphaned children.

Staff Counsellor, Fiona Beckford, has visited the project and seen the work being done first hand, meeting the Director of the project, Rev Osei Akoto and staff who will be working at the care home.  She commented “that before the charity arrived, the children in this village had no clean drinking water, no access to an education and many would go for days on end without a meal. Thanks to the amazing work of the charity, the village now has two water pumps, the children are being given an education and being fed one meal a day”.

A plaque bearing the name of Luton Sixth Form College has now been erected at the entrance to one of the homes.

Simon Kitchener, Principal, commented:  “Once again, the students of Luton Sixth Form College have demonstrated their compassion and a real awareness of the needs of children in less fortunate circumstances than their own, by prioritising this donation over social events for themselves”.
