Biology (GCSE)
Why study GCSE Biology?
You may have a career aim that requires a Science GCSE at grade 4 or above and failed to achieve this at high school. This course is aimed at these students.
Entry Requirements
In addition to our general entry requirements, you must have: GCSE Science – at least grade 3 (or Pass in Level 2 BTEC/OCR Science). You need to be dedicated and have the ability to evaluate and process large amounts of information. You also need good time management skills and the ability to undertake independent study.
The Course
The course will cover the following units:
- You and Your Genes.
- Keeping Healthy.
- Living Together – Food and Ecosystems.
- Using Food and Controlling Growth.
- The Human Body – Staying Alive.
- Life on Earth – Past, Present and Future.
- Ideas about Science.
- Practical Skills.
It will also test mathematical skills through subject-based questions.
Course Activities
As a Biology student you will expected to carry out experiments, work in small groups to deliver presentations, make use of the internet to research and view animations as well as contribute to in- class discussions. The lessons are designed to involve variety with both a combination of note-taking and engaging interactive activities. All students are required to undertake reading around the subject outside college; this should be a minimum of three hours per week.
Career and Progression Opportunities
GCSE Science at grade 4 or above is an essential subject for some careers. This course is suitable for those who want to enter into careers which require GCSE Science as a pre-requisite, such as teaching or some nursing courses.
Course Structure and Assessment
This one-year course is externally assessed with two examinations in June. The examinations last for one hour, 45 minutes and are worth 90 marks each.
