Certificate in Gym Instruction (YMCA)

Why study Fitness Instructing?

This course is an additional qualification which enables successful candidates to be able to work in a gym environment. With a drive towards a healthier nation, there are increasing opportunities for those seeking employment in this area. Knowledgeable and confident staff are key elements in a successful fitness industry.

Entry Requirements

In addition to our general entry requirements, you must have:

  • GCSE Science – grade 4 (or have successfully completed the first year of the BTEC Level 3
  • Sport Extended Certificate or National Diploma course)

You may be required to complete a pre-enrolment test.

The Course

  • Anatomy and physiology.
  • How to maintain health, safety and welfare in a variety of fitness environments, including the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults.
  • How to programme safe and effective exercise for a range of clients, the health benefits of physical activity and the importance of healthy eating.
  • How to communicate with clients effectively, and motivate clients to adhere to an exercise programme.
  • The skills and knowledge required to plan and prepare a gym-based exercise programme with apparently healthy adults – both individuals and groups. This may include young people in the 14-16 age range, provided they are part of a larger adult group. Client groups also covered are older adults, ante and postnatal clients and disabled clients provided the
    relevant contraindications and key safety guidelines are observed.

Course Activities

Students learn through a variety of activities including discussions, note-taking, reading, exam questions, tests, practical activities and individual research.

Career and Progression Opportunities

This qualification is aimed at the learner who wants to pursue a career in the health and fitness the industry as a fitness instructor in the context of gym-based exercise.

The next step would be to study a Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training.

Course Structure and Assessment

To achieve the YMCA Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instruction, learners must successfully complete 5 mandatory units:

Mandatory Units (learners must complete all 5 units)

Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise and Fitness Instructors
Assessment: Multiple choice online theory paper and assessment workbook

Providing a positive customer experience in the exercise environment
Assessment: Assessment workbook/observation

Lifestyle management and health awareness
Assessment: Assessment workbook

Gym based programme planning and preparation
Assessment: Written documents/observations/ case studies/questions

Gym based programme delivery and professional instruction
Assessment: Practical and observation
