Why Study Early Childhood Development?
The Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Early Childhood Development is ideal for students who are interested in working with young children and want to gain a solid foundation for careers or further study in education, childcare, or child psychology.
This qualification combines academic learning with real-world experience, helping students develop the skills and knowledge required by universities and employers in the early years sector. Students will learn how to support the development and wellbeing of children from birth to eight years old through both theory and hands-on experience.
Entry Requirements
In addition to our general entry requirements, you must have:
- GCSE English – Grade 3
- GCSE Maths – Grade 3
The Course
Students will take part in a mandatory work placement, where they will gain practical experience working with young children in settings such as nurseries, preschools, or primary schools. This placement is essential for developing confidence and competence in working with children.
Classroom-based learning will cover child development, play, health and wellbeing, and safeguarding. Students will explore how children grow and learn, and how professionals can support them in a variety of settings.
Course Activities
Students will:
- Examine how children develop physically, emotionally, socially, and cognitively from birth to age eight
- Learn the importance of play-based learning and how to create stimulating environments for children
- Explore safeguarding, child protection, and health and safety in early years settings
- Study the impact of key legislation and frameworks such as the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
- Gain valuable insight through work placement observations, reflections, and evaluations
Career and Progression Activities
This qualification supports progression to:
- University courses in Early Childhood Studies, Primary Education, Child Psychology, or Social Work
- Apprenticeships in Early Years Education, Supporting Teaching and Learning, or Children’s Residential Care
- Employment in settings such as nurseries, preschools, or family support services
Possible future careers include:
- Early Years Practitioner
- Teaching Assistant

Course Structure and Assessment
This two-year qualification is equivalent to one A Level and consists of four units, a mix of internal (coursework) and external (exam) assessment.
Externally Assessed Units (Exam or Set Tasks):
- Children’s Development (Exam)
- Supporting Children’s Play (Controlled assessment)
Internally Assessed Units (Coursework):
- Observation, Assessment and Planning
- Promoting Children’s Development Through Play
Assessment methods include written assignments, presentations, case studies, and placement-based tasks.
