RadioLaB- Luton Sixth Form Students On Air!

Students from Luton Sixth Form College’s BTEC in Sound Design and Podcasting have benefitted from a week-long work placement with RadioLaB 97.1FM, the community radio station operated by the University of Bedfordshire.

In the weeks leading up to the placement, the students have been taught about how to structure and present a radio show targeting their age group, as well as media law, and broadcast technology. During the week, students learned how to operate the desk and other broadcasting equipment before going on air, live, for three days.

Teacher Andy Waterfield said “This is always a highlight of the year for us; this is a real live experience. There’s no second takes, and they have to take it very seriously and demonstrate complete professionalism.  This year, all the students involved have met and exceeded every expectation!”

Student  Jake   said: "This is so interesting. It has been great to learn about radio and how it works and it's amazing to have the chance to on air live."

Terry Lee from the University of Bedfordshire said “We love hosting the students from Luton Sixth Form College each year. They do so well and cope with the pressure of live broadcasting exceptionally well.”

The experience helps students add to their portfolio of evidence to support their qualification which in recent years has achieved very high pass rates, and last year 100% of students achieved Distinction or Distinction *.
