Physical Education

Physical Education looks beyond the pitch, exploring the psychology, anatomy and sociology of sport and physical activity. This is a predominantly theoretical course, ideal if you’re interested in the science behind performance and want to progress into teaching, coaching or sports science.

What are the entry requirements?
You'll need a grade 4 in GCSE English, a grade 4 in GCSE Maths, and two grade 4s in GCSE Science (or one grade 4 plus a Merit in Level 2 BTEC/OCR Science). You don't need to have studied GCSE PE, but you will need to complete transition work over the summer and a sporting trial to assess your skill level.
What will you learn?
You'll study applied anatomy and physiology, skill acquisition, and the sociology of sport, alongside exercise physiology, biomechanics, and sport psychology, including topics like motivation, leadership and stress management.
Is this course mostly practical or theoretical?
It's predominantly theoretical, with strong links to GCSE PE content. A non-examined assessment lets you demonstrate your skills as a player, performer or coach in a sport of your choice.
What can this course lead to?
Many PE students progress into teaching or sports science, continuing into Higher Education to specialise in one of the many areas covered by the course.
