Physics

Physics is the fundamental science that explains why the natural world behaves as it does, from forces and waves to particle physics and astrophysics. If you’re enthusiastic about the subject and have strong maths skills, this demanding course will make you think in genuinely new ways. In year one, you’ll study towards an AS level in this course and sit the AS exam at the end of the year, giving you a clear picture of how you’re doing before you start year two.

What are the entry requirements?
You'll need a grade 4 in GCSE English, a grade 6 in GCSE Maths, and two grade 6s in GCSE Science (or a grade 6 in Physics specifically, if you're taking Triple Science). You'll also need an overall GCSE average of 5.6. If you're not studying A-level Maths, you'll add Level 3 Mathematical Studies (Core Maths) to your timetable.
What will you learn?
You'll study how forces affect materials, the nature of sound, light and radio waves, electricity and electromagnetism, and particle physics, combining theory with substantial hands-on practical work.
Is Physics right for me?
It suits students who enjoy problem-solving and want a subject that constantly challenges you to think in different ways. Strong maths skills are essential.
What can this course lead to?
Physics is a requirement for many university courses, particularly Engineering. Physicists are in demand across universities, financial institutions and IT companies, valued for their analytical and mathematical ability.
